How WPM is calculated
Words per minute uses a standard word of five characters, including spaces. That keeps scores comparable no matter whether the text is full of short or long words. This test reports net WPM: only characters from correctly typed words count. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included, so the gap between the two shows how much your errors cost you.
Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that matched the expected character. Corrected mistakes still count against accuracy, because they cost you time.
What is a good typing speed?
Most adults who type regularly land around 35–45 WPM. Above 50 WPM is comfortably above average, 70+ is fast, and professional typists and competitive typists sustain 100 WPM or more. Accuracy matters as much as speed: at 95% accuracy you are fixing roughly one word in every sentence.
To improve, slow down until you are above 97% accuracy, keep your fingers on the home row and stop looking at the keyboard. Speed follows accuracy.
Frequently asked questions
Is this typing test accurate?
Timing uses the browser’s high-resolution clock and starts on your first keystroke, so reading time before you start is not counted. WPM follows the standard five-characters-per-word definition.
Why is my net WPM lower than my raw WPM?
Net WPM only counts correctly typed words. Every word left with a mistake is excluded, so the difference between raw and net WPM is the speed your errors cost you.
Can I take the typing test on my phone?
Yes. Tap the text to open the keyboard. Phone typing speeds are usually lower than keyboard speeds, so compare phone results with phone results.
Is my result saved?
Your best score and recent results are saved in your own browser only. Nothing is uploaded, and clearing your browser data removes them.
